Description
DirectShow FilterPack is a lightweight package of DirectShow
media filters which, together with FFDShow, will enable
you to play many different kinds of encoded/encrypted audio and video with your favorite DirectShow media player.
By default Windows is capable of playing MP3 Audio (MP3-files) because of the "MPEG-1 Stream Splitter" and the
"Fraunhofer MP3 Decoder" which are shipped with Windows. But unlike MP3, Windows doesn't know how to handle
Vorbis Audio (OGG-files).
This picture (a DirectShow Graph) illustrates the way of a OGG-file being played/rendered with DirectShow:

- 1. Source Filter
- It all begins with the media file itself. You have to see this OGG-file as a little package, a container, with Vorbis Audio inside.
- The Source Filter (quartz.dll) reads the data from the OGG-file and transfers this data to the OGG Splitter.
- 2. Splitter
- The OGG Splitter actually separates the Vorbis Audio from the OGG-file/container
- and transfers the encoded/encrypted audio to the Vorbis Audio Decoder.
- 3. Decoder
- The Vorbis Audio Decoder decodes/decrypts the Vorbis audio and transfers the decoded/decrypted audio to the Audio Renderer.
- 4. Renderer
- The Audio Renderer is the actual link between DirectShow and your hardware audio driver.
- It's capable of transferring any type of decoded/decrypted audio to your hardware audio driver for you to hear.
- In this example, the Audio Renderer plays/renders the decoded/decrypted Vorbis Audio.
As you can see in the DirectShow Graph above, with the OGG Splitter (part of DSFP) and FFDShow being able to
decode Vorbis Audio, Windows can now handle Vorbis Audio (OGG-files).
With your favorite DirectShow media player you can also take a look at the DirectShow Graph of this OGG-file:
Here you can see which filters are being used and you can configurate each of them (when applicable) if you like.
Click here for more DirectShow Graph examples
DirectShow FilterPack consists of 12 Source- and Splitter filters (stage 1 and 2). That's because another piece of
software called FFDShow is already capable of decoding a lot of encoded/encrypted audio and video, but FFDShow
can do much more than that!
DirectShow FilterPack greatly relies on FFDShow and FFDShow is almost completely useless without Splitter filters,
but DirectShow FilterPack and FFDShow together can play/render almost anything! Many Splitter filters and a couple
of Source filters are also embedded in Media Player Classic (a DirectShow media player). But Media Player Classic
can't play/render lossless audio for instance, so in this case DirectShow FilterPack is still usefull.
Unlike codecpacks, DirectShow FilterPack doesn't consist of one single codec or encoder. This means you can not
create your own music/videos with it. It can only be used to play/render audio and video files. And besides, you don't
even need those (big) codecpacks if you only need DivX/XviD/H.264 and MP3/AAC/Vorbis to create your own music/
videos for instance!
Neither does DirectShow FilterPack include duplicate DirectShow media filters. Something you see quite often with
some codecpacks is they include 2 or 3 DirectShow filters for the same purpose. They have FFDShow for Vorbis
Audio decoding for instance, but then they also include the CoreVorbis DirectShow Filter, or even worse, the OGG
DirectShow Filters from years ago. This can cause conflicts/errors when Windows is trying to build a DirectShow
Graph in order to play your favorite music/videos. No wonder a lot of codecpacks are very big with all these duplicate
and useless DirectShow filters inside.
Nor does DirectShow FilterPack contain a DirectShow media player. So not a single file-type will be associated with
any kind of DirectShow media player during the installation/registration of DirectShow FilterPack.
DirectShow FilterPack is a no-nonsense lite-weight package of only the most important media filters. Hence it's
possible to maintain a very small filesize of around 1.63MB!
I don't like installers and that's the reason why I'm using BAT-files to install/register all the DirectShow filters. All the
BAT-files do is letting Windows know the DirectShow filters in my package are available and ready for use by adding
them to the Windows Registry. This way Windows can use them to build DirectShow Graphs. Or in other words:
this way you can use them to play your favorite music/videos you couldn't play before.
Requirements
-   Windows XP (haven't tested it on Windows Vista, simply because I don't have/like it (yet))
- (most of the filters are unicode releases and are for Windows XP only.)
-   DirectShow based media player like:

Media Player Classic (MPC), Zoom Player, RadLight,
The Core Media Player and Windows Media Player.
- (My DirectShow FilterPack won't work with plug-in based media players like WinAMP and XMPlay!)
-   FFDShow
-   QuickTime Alternative (optional)
- QuickTime Alternative allows you to play QuickTime files (MOV,QT) without having to install QuickTime Player.
-   Real Alternative (optional)
- Real Alternative allows you to play RealMedia files (RA,RM,RAM,RMVB) without having to install RealPlayer.
-   Windows Media Format 11 Runtime (optional)
- Windows Media Lite allows you to play (streamed) Windows Media files (WMA,WMV,etc.) without having to install Windows Media Player.

- 2. Browse to the directory you just extracted the whole content to.
- 3. Run "DSFP_inst.bat".
In every subdirectory you'll find an "install.bat" and "uninstall.bat" to install or uninstall every filter separately.
If you don't plan on using a specific DirectShow filter, you can savely remove it's directory.
Removal
- 1. Browse to the "DirectShow FilterPack" directory.
- 2. Run "DSFP_uninst.bat".
- 3. Remove the "DirectShow FilterPack" directory.
FFDShow configuration
In the StartMenu browse to the FFDShow folder. There you will find the Audio & Video Decoder configuration panels:
First of all the media formats need to be configurated correctly in the "Codecs" section of both configuration panels.
Otherwise some media files can't be played/rendered in the end. Please enable the necessary audio and video formats:
MP1,MP2,MP3 (libmad): libmad is qualitywise the best choice as a MP3 decoder.
Vorbis (Tremor): Tremor has some advantages over libavcodec.
FLAC, True Audio, WAVPACK: Embedded only (within MKV-files for instance).
  MPEG1,2 (libavcodec): libmpeg2 has problems time-seeking through MPEG1 files
and it shows a little bit more artifacts compared to libavcodec, hence libavcodec
is recommended. In order to watch DVDs, you also have to enable "DVD decoding".
WMV1/7, 2/8, 3/9, VC-1: There may still be some cases that can cause problems with
FFDShow. In that case you can simply revert back to Windows Media by disabling the format.
Fraps: When Fraps is installed, keep it disabled. When you don't have Fraps, you can
enable it of course, but make sure FFDShow's "Output" is RGB32 only for proper colours.
Audio Decoder Configuration
In here the "Volume Normalization" feature can be very handy.
It's especially handy when it comes to low volume audio (movies in particular). It pushes the volume to a more acceptable and normal level.
There are a lot more features you can enable to change the sound of your music; there's an equalizer, a mixer and you
can even use a digital reciever by enabling "AC3" on the "Output" tab. I would say; take a look around and suit yourself.
Video Decoder Configuration
In here you can enable the "Postprocessing" feature which produces a smoother video image by removing some 'noise'.
There is a possibility with MPEG2 material / DVDs where any form of postprocessing can screw up the video image.
Disable "Postprocessing" in that case!
When you're watching DVDs, you also have to enable the "Deinterlacing" feature (unless your DVD is progressive of
course). Although a bit slower than the rest, "Yet Another DeInterlacing Filter (yadif)" would be the best choice as
Deinterlacing Methode.
Although the video image quality with default settings is already very good, but if it's necessary, you can greatly
enhance it with the help of "Levels", "Blur & NR", "Sharpen", "Warpsharp" and "Noise" for example.
You just have to play with these settings a little yourself.
You also have to enable the "Subtitles" feature in order to watch video files with (embedded) subtitles. Subtitles will now
show up on top of the video stream. If you rather like the subtitles to show up beneath the video stream, you can enable
the "Letterbox" option. If you also like to have the same font as with the Gabest - VobSub Filter, you can take a look at
the "Subtitles - Font" tab (first enable "Autosize", then change "Body" to 32).
To change subtitles (when applicable) you need to right-click on the FFDShow Video Decoder tray icon and select your
subtitle of choice from the "Subtitle sources"-menu.
The "OSD" (On Screen Display) feature has the ability to show you all the technical aspects of the current media file
you're playing. You can also make you own personal OSDs by creating different profiles. On screen it will look like this.
In the "Tray, dialog & paths" section of both configuration panels you can
enable "Extended info". Now when you move your mouse over the Modern or
Classic FFDShow tray icon you can quickly find out some interesting
information about the current media file you're playing, like: the kind of media
you're playing, the current filter(s) being used and audio statistics like bitrate,
frequency and channels. |

Extra info
The duration of VBR MP3-files is reported incorrectly by the Gabest - MPA Splitter.
The Gabest - OGG Splitter does support Theora Video, but only to a certain degree.
The Gabest - AVI Splitter supports incomplete, semi-corrupt and interleaved AVI-files, which the standard AVI
Splitter shipped with Windows does not.
The Gabest - MPEG Splitter is also capable of splitting H.264 Video and AAC Audio.
Although the Gabest - MP4 Splitter supports most MOV-files (QuickTime), for some audio formats you'll still need
  QuickTime (Alternative).
